Summary[]
XERO is an alternate universe version of Sonic the Hedgehog, much like is canonical counterpart he sought out adventure and danger from a young age, but due to the actions and heroics of Shadow Robotnik, he never got involved with saving the world. This change led him to travel the world alone for new thrills and adventures.
However, during one of his adventures a Phantom Ruby from another timeline where it was defeated by Sonic entered the universe and caused a large avalanche. Being caught off guard, Sonic's legs were crushed and trapped under rocks and snow, leaving him stranded in the harsh cold. As time passed, Sonic's hopes of being rescued fell to nothing, and when he was at his mental and emotional limit did the Phantom Ruby speak to him.
The Phantom Ruby offered to save the Hedgehog as long as he donned it as its new host. Agreeing to the terms Sonic gained the powers of the Phantom Ruby. The Phantom Ruby then began to feed Sonic alternative futures of himself, futures where he became a hero and had many friends. This planted seeds of envy, entitlement, and resentment. These thoughts festered until Sonic was pulled into the universe of the Arabian Nights.
Being tasked to save the world by Shahra, assuming the heart of a hero resided in the hedgehog like his alternate universe counterpart. But this quickly turned into a power trip in which fed into his entitlement. Instead of being its savior Sonic became its conqueror. The defeat of Erazor Djinn, and the destruction of the world rings gave rise to XERO.
Merlina much like Shahra thought XERO held the heart of his heroic counterpart and could be manipulated to help her. While XERO did help her gain power, it was only to show his superiority over her, killing her and shattering Excalibur to reign supreme over the two universes as a god.
Even after said conquest, the Phantom Ruby continued to share knowledge and visions of Shadow Robotnik performing the heroic deeds he would have done in another life, this continued to foster resentment toward the hedgehog before coming to ahead.
After the defeat of Solaris, XERO took advantage of the chaos and lapse of concentration to pull Shadow into his realms, now using the chance to take revenge on the person who he saw as the reason for his suffering and unhappiness.
