Summary

Sonic, better known as Rewrite, is an original EXE take by SpringlessEcho, and is the titular antagonist of his Friday Night Funkin' mod, Vs Rewrite.

In the 90's, an exploiter priest decided to create something to deceive people of the time, and get easy money on top of it. The priest of a popular church created a fake computer program that supposedly will allow people to communicate with Christ, the lack of information and the ease to manipulate a fake story at the time contributed to the idea being bought. Lots of copies of said program (which was false) were sold by the church, shortly afterwards, some accidents occurred reporting the death of people who supposedly were influenced by the software to take their own lives.

The repercussion was loud, but the scarcity of evidence meant that it was not possible to arrest the priest immediately. So, an investigation began. Meanwhile, the priest decides to test the misleading program he commissioned, to somehow understand how that could be happening. After sending the first message, he was frighteningly answered by someone on the other side, which in a disturbing way started to talk about life and about how the priest used something sacred to manipulate people. When the priest questions the entity - "who are you?" It just answers "I am GOD."

The priest is found dead shortly after the incident, "accidentally" set fire to his own house and his body. Copies of said software were confiscated by the authorities, but some remain circulating around to this day. One of those copies falls into the hand of an unknown person, The game now takes the shape of a 3D experience similar to a Sega Saturn game, where you play as Sonic who came back to their island after defeating Dr. Robotnik, and is ready to reunite with their friends to play games and have a good time. The game is a mix of a party game with classic Sonic platforming style, where Sonic plays minigames with their friends, Tag, Hide n' Seek, etc. But, as you would expect, things start to go south when the player himself ends up killing Sonic's friends and the game seems to react bizarrely accurate to their actions.

Sonic progressively goes more and more self aware as the game progresses, taking actions for himself, and inducing the player to do things their way, lurking into the player's mind with the intention to claim their soul. The red rings Sonic wears in their body are the in-game representation of their victims' souls, they collect them after killing each of their friends in the end of their respective minigames. those being the souls of (Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik) which are all vessels to past players of the game, and are not the only souls who became part of the anomaly. There are a lot more souls inside the game, some more lost in character than others, some are older and some are younger, but all forever playing their role as a puppet for the experience, forever trapped in this hellish dimension. that can come in a variety of forms, and happen in many ways depending on the observer, it doesn’t even have to be a Sonic game, or a game in general, there are endless possibilities.

Personality

Although Sonic does carry a specific personality, it's important to note that emotions and any human-like traces work very different on them, since they are not a physical entity and exist in another dimensional realm, so take this as a "translation" of their personality to a closest language, with that said. Sonic's personality will slowly transition during a game's playthrough, as they get progressively more aware of what they are and their true potential. At core they have an eccentric personality, they have a big ego and are very manipulative, being extremely clever. They hide their true intentions from their victims, luring them with something that they like and/or is special to them, trying to come off as welcoming & comforting, creating a false sensation of safeness and masking their true core in the simulated personality of the character they are impersonating. Although being a formidable liar, they can get very angry when things don't go the way they intended, in those instances, they have a hard time hiding some of their true aspects.

This leads to their whole world getting unstable together with them, since Sonic, is not only the character, but the whole anomaly and everything in it. In those circumstances Sonic might have very rapid mood changes and turn into the Midareta form, In this state, he becomes in-between no self-awareness and full self-awareness, which results in instability and inexpressibly "feeling gray". This is a very unstable form that affects not only Sonic, but their surroundings too. After obtaining the third ring, Sonic takes the Wurugashikoi form, in this state, he becomes fully self-aware himself, as they can bend the anomaly to their will without limits and even affect the real world. They no longer try mimicking the original Sonic mannerisms and instead take on a more eccentric and confident posture, which reflects their narcissist and sadistic nature a lot more.

When Sonic's true nature leaks through to the point where their model starts to alter drastically, he then assumes his Kyokai form. Despite being closer to their "true form", it cannot be fully conceived in 3D, so the model collapses in on itself, giving Sonic a broken mesh appearance. The rings are fused into his body and become massively taller. Sonic is incapable of true love and the only thing that truly matters to them is their goal, they have zero moral code and will commit any cruelty necessary to claim a victim's soul, integrating it into themselves, so they be tortured for eternity in the multiple and endless replays that the anomaly will undergo.

• Higher-Dimensional Existence and Immortality (Type 9: His true nature is a non-physical entity, with a true form that cannot be fully conceived in 3D, existing inside a separate dimensional realm)

• Incorporeality (Exists as a non-physical entity that takes on the form of polygon mesh.)

• Avatar Creation (Sonic is merely a vessel for the anomaly itself. Created vessels for the souls it has assimilated)

• Breaking the Fourth Wall (Demonstrates awareness of his fictional status, as he knows of the different EXE incarnations, and uses that knowledge to cater to the player's interests and expectations of an "exe mod". Rewrite's lyrics implies he is aware of the creepypasta's continued trend since its original creation. Can "see" the player)

• Shapeshifting and Body Control (Rewrite can shape-shift into anyone and anything at any time. Can replicate some of Sonic's signature moves, such as his Spin Dash and Peel Out. Stated to be able to shapeshift into anything, as seen with him precisely mimicking the appearances of Majin Sonic, Sonic.exe, and Lord X. Able to detach his limbs and move freely.)

• Soul Manipulation, Sealing/Transmutation, BFR, and Absorption (Those that fall victim to Rewrite have their souls assimilated in the anomaly itself. Instantly turns Boyfriend into a red ring upon losing, sealing his soul within it in the process. The red rings are in-game representations of their victims' souls. The red rings work similarly to Warp Rings, in that it will sentence anybody who interacts with it into the soul's personal prison)

• Reality Warping (Rewrite can be more than an individual at once, he's not limited to just looking like Sonic characters, he can be anything, and his appearance can be molded by the observer. Can warp and control his world. Distorted his surroundings and plunged the sky into pitch-black darkness)

• Mind Manipulation, Telepathy, and Extrasensory Perception (Rewrite can read people's minds, know their memories, feelings and intentions, not only that, but once he starts getting into a person's mind, it gets progressively easier to start messing with their will and sense of reality. It is most likely that through this ability, Rewrite was able to influence people to claim their own lives. The vessels gradually lose more and more of their memories until they are completely subsumed in the character they inhabit)

Along with his deceptive nature, Rewrite recognizes what the players' want and expect from an "exe mod", and so uses his knowledge of other EXEs to cater to those expectations and grab players' attention)

Weaknesses: Has a limited sense of awareness without his Rings, and is prone to fits of instability in his Midareta form.
