Introduction

Note: The following has been taken from the main Versus Battles Wiki

The FC/OC VS Battles Wiki is mainly a site that attempts to index the statistics of characters across many different fictional franchises.

However, as the site name implies, we also allow our members to pit fictional characters against each other in hypothetical matchups for entertainment purposes.

That said, certain VS matches are done too often, while others are too controversial. Additionally, VS threads might be of sub-par quality. The managing staff has grown weary continuously deciding verdicts of controversial and sub-standard threads again and again, and hence have listed a few rules, to improve the quality of VS discussions.

The listed rules are to be followed for versus threads, in addition to the site rules.

The Rules

Creating Matches

It is strongly suggested to detail the scenario of the battle, by giving details such as a location, the method of victory (e.g. KO, death), whether the combatants have preparation time, are blood-lusted or in character, which version of the characters are being used, and so on. If no other specifications are stated for the match, standard battle assumptions will be considered.

  • Preferably add links to the relevant character profiles to make it easier to compare their abilities.
    • It is allowed to make Versus Threads with FC/OC characters fighting VSBW characters, but they can only be added to the FC/OC character in question.
    • Even if a character has the potential to reach a certain tier, the use of any tier between that tier and the one it scales to is not allowed. For example, w:c:vsbattles:Avatar of Calamity cannot be used in a vs thread with a tier between High 7-A and 2-A or Unknown and 2-A depending on the used key.
    • Please do not create versus threads for characters without profiles in this wiki. Otherwise, it is impossible for other users to verify a character's strengths and weaknesses. For the same reasons, please do not create versus threads for characters whose statistics are all rated as unknown.
    • It is not advised to create versus threads with characters in an ongoing series without, or severely lacking, quantifiable statistics.
      • Avoid creating matchups between characters with vague or controversial powerscaling, especially between those from the same verse.
      • Given the unfathomably extreme differences in scale between different characters in tiers High 1-B and 1-A, take note that fights between them demand considerable knowledge and analysis, and may often be impossible to determine due to insufficient information.
  • It is not fine to restrict abilities in a versus matchup, implicitly or expressly. Matches that are arranged this way should not be added to the character profiles, as they don't involve their full potential, and are only intended for casual entertainment.
    • An exception would be if the restricted ability/technique has a separate tier from the main one, and is one the character can consciously restrict themselves from using. In this case, the match can be added.
    • The match can also be added if Optional Equipments such as optional power-ups and items are restricted, or if the ability being restricted is indexed after a "Likely" or "Possibly" conditional.
  • Match-ups with equalized statistics (with the exception of speed) are not allowed, as they turn the entire tiering system unnecessary.
  • Kindly do not create spite or stomp threads, whether by tier, speed or an absurd difference in hax proficiency (that is, a very hax character vs one with little to no hax) unless the other character possesses abilities that compensate for this advantage.
    • See here for information regarding one-shots in versus threads.
  • In "reality versus fiction" threads there are three possible setups:
    • People fighting with their ideas.
    • People destroying images and texts.
    • The real world and fiction are regarded on equal terms.
    • Only the third variant makes sense in a fighting context, and as such, the first two options are not to be considered. Read here for more information regarding the issue.
  • If either character owner does not want the match to continue or be featured on profiles, the thread should be closed and not put on either page, regardless of outcome.
    • If a user has a history of refusing to list matches that their character loses, they run a risk of simply being banned from versus matches.

Participating

Remember to thoroughly read the basic statistics and powers of both profiles before posting on a versus thread. This prevents threads from becoming needlessly long and saves users the trouble of having to completely explain each character's powers and abilities for each and every thread.

  • Please state valid reasons for why a battle should go a certain way when posting in a versus thread. Meaning, don't simply say that a certain character wins and leave it at that. It makes your answer look unmotivated and turns it harder to decide the outcome.
  • When bumping a thread that has been inactive for a long time, please make sure to look over both profiles to ensure that the match has not been changed, and to avoid concluded topics.
  • Unless special circumstances are met, which would be analyzed on a case by case basis, characters who have shown resistance to time-stopping abilities are assumed to be resistant to time-slowing abilities by default.

Deciding a Winner

The winner will be determined by the side having better constructive arguments, rather than one word/one sentence votes, which will be disregarded. However, one word/one sentence votes agreeing with another member's reasoning will be accepted as valid votes.

  • When the thread reaches a valid vote count, a grace period of 24 will be acknowledged, starting when the final vote that resulted in valid vote count was posted. After this time period the match can be added, with proper format, to the respective characters' pages, or, for Tier 2 characters or otherwise locked profiles, requested in the Versus Addition Request Thread.
    • Anybody, including the creator of the thread, gets exactly one vote.
    • For a verdict, there must be at least 3 votes in favor of one character/team, with a minimum difference of three votes. Some examples:
      • A final vote tally of 2-0 will be considered invalid.
      • A final vote tally of 3-0 will be considered valid.
      • A final vote tally of 4-1 will be considered valid.
      • A final vote tally of 3-1 will be considered invalid.
    • If both sides have equivalent posts with constructive arguments, the thread shall be deemed inconclusive.
      • Inconclusive matches, in which the opposing parties are incapable of defeating each other, should only added to profiles if they had a notable debate. A debate is considered notable, in this context, if it features a lengthy debate over an aspect not directly listed on profile.
        • Examples of such are standard tactics (if not listed), ability mechanics and (unlisted) potency, interaction between abilities, weaknesses, verse equalization, potential methods to circumvent resistances and immortalities, potential learning or growth they could achieve in the timeframe of the fight, whether they could escape long enough for prep based abilities to come into play, etc.
  • Versus Threads that involve more than two characters (i.e. a 2v1) are allowed and can be added to profiles so long as the matchup does not qualify as a spite or stomp.
  • Avoid adding the results of versus threads that involve composite versions of the characters, that are not listed in their profile pages within this wiki, to either of the involved character profiles, as they are complicated and do not paint a proper picture of the character abilities.

Speed Equalization Rules and Assumptions

Per default the following rules and assumptions will be taken if a match takes place in a speed equalized setting:

  • The combat speed of that faster character is assumed to be equalized to the combat speed of the slower character. Every other speed the faster character has is reduced by the same multiplier. This includes the speed of any attacks, projectiles, reactions, perception, flight etc.
    • Speed Amplification techniques are assumed to grant the same percentile of increase to a character's equalized speeds, as they would to their usual speeds.
  • Any speed equalized match, in which a major reason a character loses is due to having a disadvantage against some speed value they usually wouldn't have a disadvantage against, may not be added to profiles.
    • As a result, winning a speed equalized match against a faster opponent due to a speed boost so large that it blitzes the opponent will not be added.
    • Matches in which characters with Immeasurable speed lose against not-immeasurable passive abilities would likewise not be added, as the Immeasurable characters would normally be faster than the instantaneous passives.
    • While time stop, which could be viewed as an infinite speed amplification, is assumed to work even on characters that would usually bypass it via speed, those matches can likewise not be added.
  • Abilities based on speed are assumed to be retained. Characters that can run over water via speed can, for example, still do so even if now technically too slow for that. Likewise, a character who can create a tornado by running fast in a circle can still create one by this manner, even though they are now running slower.
    • As a result, Immeasurable characters that get speed equalized retain their ability to travel through time, even if it now isn't via speed anymore.

Notes

For the sake of variation, if you wish to be involved in versus threads, it is appreciated if you do not only participate in the ones featuring extremely popular characters.

While the main Versus Battles Wiki has a dynamic page list, to find matchups you will have to manually use the categories for specific tiers to find matchups. Keep in mind to check the abilities of the pages you wish to make a versus thread for carefully, to avoid making an extremely one sided fight.
