Summary

Son of a frost giant, lover of deception and chaos, Loki Laufeyson was always doomed to be an outsider in Asgard. Despite his cunning wit and mastery of sorcery, he remained forever in the shadow of his step-brother Thor. Though Loki crafted many schemes to destroy Thor and usurp the throne of Odin, he failed time and time again. Newly released from an Asgardian prison, he now offers to help S.H.I.E.L.D. in exchange for his freedom. But make no mistake; nothing Loki offers is ever as it seems. Official Bio

This misfit of Asgard, forever carrying a grudge over the death of his father and the Aesir's love for Thor and Balder, inadvertently inspired the creation of the Avengers during one of his plots to destroy his step-brother Thor. A trickster and would-be usurper, Loki schemes constantly, and has allied with Dr. Doom in his recent plots against the Avengers and his hated brother. S.H.I.E.L.D. REPORT: LOKI AND THE WRECKING CREW

Garthwaite claims to have found his powers channelled into his crowbar during a battle with Thor—antipathy toward the Thunder God being another thing the Wrecker has come to share with Loki, whom he believes granted him said power in the first place. Shortly thereafter the Wrecking Crew was born. They have been in and out of the Raft ever since, and the Wrecker has done time in the Vault.

SHIELD psychoanalysts suggest the Wrecker is a constant reminder to Loki of power that should have been his, but he also finds the Wrecker a useful pawn in his endless battle against Thor. To the Wrecker, his own powers give vent to his anger over his childhood. This is perhaps the most relevant quality the Loki and the Wrecker share: resentment toward their fathers. The rest of the Wrecking Crew is along for the ride, although we believe Thunderball still harbours ambitions to lead the group himself.

S.H.I.E.L.D. PERSONNEL BRIEF: LOKI

Classification: Extradimensional hostile (EDH)

Nationality: Asgardian

Criminal Record: Not applicable. As a designated EDH, however, SHIELD has flagged Loki with an Always-Detain designation whenever he manifests in this plane of reality.

Powers: Loki evidences a skill set commensurate with “magic use,” the exact definition of which is currently under review by the Directorate of Intelligence’s Terms & Classifications Committee.

Known History: The Directorate knows little of Loki prior to his first appearance on Earth to attack Thor and his allies in the Avengers. SHIELD will have to defer to its resident expert on all matters Asgardian: Thor.

Observations: “Once my brother Loki numbered among the Golden Realm’s greatest champions. His wit and my strength cast aside countless threats to our father’s kingdom.

“But somehow -- I hope, through no fault of my own -- Loki’s pride in his own accomplishments curdled into jealousy of mine. He believed Father -- and the people -- gave me the love rightfully his. From that moment he began to plot my destruction. First, in the dark of night, then, once his schemes were exposed, in the bright light of day, not caring who knew him as a traitor and a scoundrel.

“Once, I loved my brother Loki very much. Perhaps, one day, he will be persuaded to return to the side of righteousness. Until then, I am grieved to say he is my enemy, and if he threatens Midgard again, I have no choice but to return him to Asgard to face Odin’s justice.” — Thor
