“ | Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin, more even than death. Summary[]
Kokkyō Kabe (国境壁 lit. Border Wall), is one of the main characters in C∅ntext.
He was born and raised at England of the 14th century. Despite being ostracized for his Japanese ethnicity, he hopes that winning the war against between France and England will make him more trustworthy towards his comrades and his people. He eventually gains a Milieu and finds greater purpose after the battle, wanting to prove his worth to the world.
He wields the almighty Formless Type Milieu, The Wall, an extremely powerful ability that creates walls and barriers.
Appearance[]
Kokkyo is a man of average height and has an extremely athletic build. Though his face wasn't revealed, he described himself to have tanned skin, short black hair, and a defined jawline. His usual attire consists of a gray cotehardie, black jeans, and black shoes.
When going to war, he wears a knight's uniform and his signature shield, which has a few cracks, and a lion insignia. He also wears a belt that contains a medium-sized dagger as his main weapon, which is mistakenly assumed to be a sword and a plethora of small throwing knives.
After receiving The Mitigator Armor, he appears to be bony white, with accents of black throughout. His dagger now becomes a pale white blade and a mechanical grey shield, but is kept hidden inside his forearm.
Personality[]
Kokkyo is introduced as an open-minded person, shown to suggest his opinion when given the permission to speak and develops extreme ingenuity in fighting while taking other people's claims and assessing them, responding dependent on the situation that call for it, being serious when necessary and being a humorous person if the people around him are in the mood to. Despite his ostracization for his Japanese ethnicity, he wholeheartedly accepts criticism from his fellow men, saying that "whatever happens, happens". He even goes through such lengths that he is willing to fight for the nation regardless of his blood, showing his loyalty.
Despite his open-mindedness, Kokkyo treats the enemy of his nation to be his enemy, stating that war does not care if people are morally just, showing his cynical attitude.
Kokkyo has a great showings of determination and confidence throughout his story. During a short confrontation against a thief, he was notably able to dodge a bullet from a gun fired at point-blank range, earning his reputation in the English Army. After his training to becoming a knight, Kokkyo was renowned for his agility and his extreme efficacy at his dagger despite wielding a heavy shield, showing his immense skill. This is best shown during the Battle of Crécy, with Kokkyo doing brutal and extremely horrid actions to his enemies, such as slowly crushing them with a shield and even carving his name to his enemy' back and forcibly cutting their insides.
On the contrary, Kokkyo shows a honorable side. If he knows that the enemy is considerably weak and/or injured, he'd simply leave them be and won't bother them any longer. For instance, he asks his enemy if they still wanted to fight and even spared them by tucking his weapons, despite him mercilessly killing their comrades.
Kokkyo's character is best defined by his Reductionist philosophy, saying that complex things needed to be simplified by examining each part that constitutes the whole, which further enhances his open-mindedness and his immense assessment skills, making him an intelligent person. His deep patriotism towards England compliments this. Despite having the blood of a Japanese, growing up, Kokkyo's goal is protect and serve his country and nothing more. Furthermore, the Slug Haggler shows a great degree of determination toward this goal. He takes a greater active part in doing this, stating that he cannot accept the actions that the German-Russian fleet for what they have done. However, he is extremely crude and ruthless towards his actions, which shows his flaws. He even admits that though his ideals may have won over them, the fact that he have to commit such questionable acts to get there does not justify what he is trying to achieve in the end.
Backstory[]
Disclaimer: The story is in no way accurate to the 14th century, but a mere interpretation on the author's part with no bias towards any party involved. Everything you see here are absolutely fictional and have no connection to the real world history in any way, shape, or form.
Background[]
Kokkyo Kabe was born and raised in England in the 14th century but had the blood of the Japanese which gave him his name. Because of this, he never got along well with many of the residents there, with some even abusing and torturing him for his race. Over the years, he slowly grew used to the ostracization and had developed both a positive and negative outlook on life, being extremely open-minded to any criticism but seeing anyone outside the nation to be an enemy. In time, he grew old enough to train as a knight, believing that becoming one would prove his worth and make him much more trustworthy than he is.
Forces[]
One day during his training, he sees a thief stealing some jewelry. He tries to act ignorant, calm, and collected, but is still wary of the thief as he attempts to approach him bizarrely. When the thief discovers his intentions, they pull out a hand cannon and shoot him. However, he managed to dodge it despite being aimed at his face from point-blank range. This earned him his respect, gaining a name for himself: "Slug Haggler" or "He who evades bullets".
However, this respect only made the people more furious towards him, torturing him as he grew up but never wanted to fight back due to him showing care towards them and could not bring himself to ever hurt them. Sometime later, his presence was noticed by the current ruler, King Edward III, who recruited him into his army.
Some years pass by, and with Kokkyo continuing his training, the battle of Crecy has begun. During his time at war, he was praised for his extreme maneuverability despite the armor weighing him down. He was able to dodge countless volleys of cannonballs, arrows, and spears that were thrown in his general direction, with some of them being deflected by his dagger, others are blocked with his shield. Eventually, the army overtook the French army, completely decimating them with their overwhelming force. At the same time, however, he eventually became worthy of receiving a Milieu, albeit subconsciously.
Oh Ashes[]
For the rest of his life, Kokkyo continued training for so long he haven't noticed that his comrades are slowly dying of old age. At one point, he was questioned for his humanity after he gained his Milieu. During the this time, he pays each one of his men before they die. He tells each one that everything would be alright, and that they must accept whatever it is that life gives them and cherish it as long as they stay alive, promising each one that he'll uphold their will and carry on the burden they once bear.
Decades pass by like wind, and centuries turn into mere seconds, his Milieu protecting him from any kind of illness and getting rid of anything that will harm him. Soon, buildings soar into the sky and technology has developed and grown, yet he still remains. His name soon became a living legend and then into an ancient myth.
The Other Side[]
To see how his power works, he tries to become a knight of the new city and after confirming his identity to the new ruler of this day's England, he was appointed as the general. And as the Russian government attempts to invade England after hearing the myth of the "Slug Haggler", they decided to test his powers to see if they were true.
They began their experimentation in an open-field area, to which an artillery strike and some tanks would be attacking him. As he slowly walked towards the marked area, he was asked if he was sure about his decision and if he was ready, to which he nodded his head in agreement and continued walking.
As the order of confirmation was given, the artillery struck, and the tanks started their attack on Kokkyo. Suddenly, a wall of air deflected all attacks and exploded all at once, with him receiving no damage at all, not even a scratch, and was perfectly intact. After the test, he was proven to be the real thing and was revered by the whole world for someone like him to exist.
Some weeks later, the Russians began their attack on Kokkyo, bombing the whole city and killing everyone that may come in their way, coming from the skies and from the seas, having no way of escape. The residents were ordered to hide inside an underground bunker, whilst the soldiers are tasked with defending them. Kokkyo was ordered to take them all by himself, with the full force of the Russian military. The general of the military then sent in the air force and began bombing him, forcing Kokkyo to go on the defensive. The shieldsman deflected all attacks like nothing and proceeded to use the wall's power to propel him towards the flying objects. However, the reflection that the shield gave ascends him above the skies, going from the Earth to the Moon in a second. Having gone up to the vastness of the void, he began making a wall out of the fabric of space behind him, not realizing that he'd inadvertently used the entire infinite universe and shaped it into a wall. Truth be told, he wasn't really trying to jump that high nor did he meant to use the entire universe as a wall, he could go through higher lengths had he wanted to, but his true intention was to jump in order to catch the jets, yet ended up jumping far above that.
Jumping back to Earth, the Russians were flabbergasted and dumbfounded by what they had just witnessed. With the momentum of Kokkyo burning the skies, the air itself started to be lit aflame, with the sound of a loud roar, howling across each corner of the planet, they knew they were doomed with fear and dread filling bubbling up inside their body. Plummeting to the ground, the Russian Air Force and the Army Fleet seemingly disappeared, along with the city surrounding him.
The reinforcements of the military were just about to arrive, but seeing the destruction that Kokkyo had caused, it was no use trying to fight knowing they too would be another pile of dead bodies added to the list. Noticing the newly arrived reinforcements, he taunted them by swinging his dagger so quickly that it created a literal storm, with the wind being fast enough to tear apart tanks in mere moments. More jets appear in the sky, with them shooting him with their machine guns, to which he dodges the incoming bullet rounds, running faster than the pilots could even escape. They simply had no choice but to run, it was all that they could do. No tanks could hit him, no missile could even kill him, they doubt even a nuclear bomb could destroy him. It was unfair.
Walking back to the city, he requested the current ruler to keep his identity a secret from the public and make it look like the army did all the work, wanting to live a simple and normal lifestyle, spending whatever time he had on exploring parts of the world he had not seen.
Wonders of Life[]
In the year 2100, Kokkyo's name was kept private and was never to be spoken again. At this time, he still remained on England, now living as a normal person but remains unmarried, probably due to him never experiencing love in the first place.
Sometime later, an unarmored Kokkyo spends his time training with his dagger. Eventually, he slowly came to the realization that the world won't change – more precisely, that the world would be more "complex" – thereafter resolving to further hone his craft in order to protect his nation.
Several months later, Kokkyo was invited to another testing program hosted by a military general and offers to show his destructive skills, testing if the legend still lives up to it's name. Swinging his sword, he is able to create a much bigger storm than what he created prior, able to blow away a mountain this time around. To test his speed, he was to be shot by a railgun that can destroy islands. As the railgun is about to fire, Kokkyo seemingly disappeared, having crossed the universe and back in just under a second. The officers were baffled by his power, having revered him more but still remained their mouth shut about his identity, showing their loyalty to him.
The Mitigator[]
With a war stirring up from England against Russia, numerous reports of them working again with Germany to take down the infamous myth, now possessing over centuries worth of technology, having colonized over 90% of space-related activities. The current ruler of the England orders their citizens to remain calm, causing rallies due to clashing ideas. The ruler thought of the words they asked to Kokkyo, responding that humans should simplify things instead of complicating them. Coming into this realization, it was already too late, countless spaceships and soldiers with plasma guns started to invade the city.
The ship is struck by several projectiles from England's military fleet; a general orders the ships to be a top priority target, knowing they would be dangerous in the later stages of the fight. Noticing that their shieldsman wasn't present, the general alerted his fellow soldiers to stall until he arrived. As the others received the order, they too began their attack against the Russian-Germany fleet. Many more ships appeared out in the sky, which fired more missiles at them, with each one coordinated and accurate enough to hit one of England's bases. Kokkyo realizes that another war is happening and immediately goes there, but is called by the general to stop by at one of their bases to get an upgrade on his armor. Arriving there almost instantly, the general showed the Slug Haggler his new equipment: An antimatter sword; a mechanical grey shield; a highly advanced custom-built armor that minimizes unnecessary movement, filters toxins, has pain-negating modules, and prevents any hacking; and a new piece of invention called RVANI (Real-Time Virtual Analysis Neural Interface)- which detects living and nonliving things, provides night-vision, determine emotional and mental states of anyone, and recreate an entire battle scenario by slowing down one's perception that allows him to analyze things and formulate counter-measures near-instantly. As he equips the armor, he begins to be even stronger, his body being so rejuvenated that he perceives everything in slow motion.
Approaching the battlefield, the soldiers felt relieved and now has the courage to fight. The opposing side seeing that the infamous myth has arrived, they decided to bring in their trump card. Just then, a massive spaceship with a size of an island appears and deploys all their mechanical supersoldiers, with each moving at the speed of light. The English solders gets overrun by the numerous supersoldiers and are on a struggle. Looking at the gigantic ship from above, Kokkyo instantly jumps up and slashes it in two. Towards the back of the fleet, the ship's general sees the newly donned shieldsman dicing their fleet like butter; however, their general orders them to not flee and asks them if they want their families to starve. Without warning, millions of supersoldiers were deployed off into space and are planning to attack Kokkyo from above.
Taking advantage of the high ground, the supersoldiers plummets down to the atmosphere and charges at Kokkyo. However, his greater speed and reflexes allows him to dodge their coordinated attack effortlessly. Reaching the climax, the supersoldiers tried barraging him with explosions and relentless missiles from point-blank range. Stopping at nothing, the explosions caused created massive shockwaves and was about to destroy Earth's atmosphere. This attack created loud crackling noises, with the English men showing a slight hint of mercy; however, Kokkyo remained alive but is stuck and could not move. He states that moving would cause the missiles to hit the other towns of England.
Kokkyo: Ignorance will get you nowhere, my friend. The fact that you still desired a war against us is quite vexing. We humans have always been this way, don't we? Whenever something becomes out of value, we'd proceed to throw it away and move on to the next source that we could find. Like a virus, we consume every valuable resource that we could find, without having to consider the consequences for others. And over the years, people develop more complex psychologies- reasons that, even when explained, could still not be understood. I have said this before and I'll say it again, we humans should simply look into ourselves and simplify these complex things; simply looking at the bigger picture is not enough, one must look at each piece and find the reason from there. Though our ideologies are vastly different, one must understand the other, not stand your ground and prove that you are right. No one in this world is in the 'right', no matter what the reason is. Due to these complexities, people have begun to criticize each other and place them into these two categories. This is happening as we speak: discrimination, war, felony, murder, and so on.Kokkyo: That's why you resolve to war? To pillage 'our' resources? You do realize that we are the same. We have the same problems, the same struggles, and the same experiences. Which one of those did I not understand? You fight for your own country and I fight for mine, that's just the way it is. There has to be no complicated reason other than just that. From your perspective, you think that you are right. But to us, you are wrong. There are a lot of people that are just like you. Neither you nor I am special, none of us are. Yes, we have freedom, but the others have that too. Everything that we have, they could do better. That's just the way the world works; we simply have to accept them.
General: So what are fighting for? You have said these things, yet you don't realize that you are doing the same to us. Our family's starving back there, and we are running out of resources. You have no right to lecture us, just because you've seen things more than us, you wouldn't understand...
Coming out unscathed, he explains his ideology of reductionism to them with the general retaliating about his hypocritical claims. However, he rebutted, saying that they too are just as hypocritical as him, saying that neither he or them are special.
“ | However... I cannot accept what you have done to my country, and you have to die for that. | „ |
Getting up close to the ship's cockpit, he holds his hands out and summons a wall with countless clocks on it. Being able to now control the 4th dimension of the entire universe and shaping into a wall, he had stacked the reflections of the previous attacks and are about to unleash it towards them. Before this, he says that he could not accept whatever they have done to his country, telling them that death is a worthy punishment for such hideous acts. blowing the entire fleet to pieces, including the island-sized ship.
War affects people greatly. One must bear the pain of being betrayed, being left alone, having lost a loved one, or having to even kill them yourself. One must not hesitate to kill, even if the consequences for such actions shall follow. They died for what they believed in and I won for what I believed to be right. Yet, none of these beliefs could be truly justified as such. My ideas may have lasted, but that's because of the crude actions I've committed to getting to where it is I am now. That is the harshness of the human world. No matter what reason you hold, no matter how weak or strong you are...There is no honor in death.

Standard Equipment: His dagger and shield | Same as before, plus The Wall | Same as before, plus: The Mitigator Armor, Antimatter Sword, Mechanical Shield and RVANI
- Mitigator Armor: A custom-built armor made for him before joining the war against the Russian-German fleet. It has highly-advanced antimatter technology that automatically destroys normal matter which negates damage, but has an advanced filtering system that still allows Kokkyo to interact with normal matter. The armor is slim and minimizes unnecessary movement, which amplifies his speed, reaction time, and thinking process. Thanks to it's antimatter properties, it removes sound, filters toxins, has pain-negating modules, and prevents any hacking. It also provides sustenance to Kokkyo, having no need to eat, sleep, or oxygen. Nonetheless, he could take off the armor if he wanted.
- Antimatter Sword: A sword made of antimatter, plain and simple. It has complex contraptions that allows him to phase through objects and ignore durability. A single slash from this weapon was able to slice apart an island-sized ship in half without any effort coming from Kokkyo.
- Mechanical Shield: A grey mechanized shield that automatically protect him from any attack that is sensed by RVANI. It mostly resides on his forearm, but could move and transfer thru other parts of his body to protect him from any unexpected angles.
- RVANI (Real-Time Virtual Analysis Neural Interface): A virtual interface that is within the armor which detects living and nonliving things, provides night-vision, determine emotional and mental states of anyone, and recreate an entire battle scenario by slowing down one's perception that allows him to analyze things and formulate counter-measures near-instantly, predicting the enemies' next attack. In under a second, he can make out the weaknesses of a person and instantly determine what flaws could be exploited. This interface is automatic and has no need for Kokkyo's conscious intuition.
Intelligence: Gifted. Kokkyo is an infamously skilled knight, being able to dodge a bullet point-blank at his face and could deflect multiple shots from cannonballs. He is a rational thinker, and uses his philosophy on Reductionism to determine and understand very complex matters by dividing them into simpler things. He is also very open-minded, capable of assessing his surroundings and determine the best course of action for that specific scenario.
Weakness: Standard Milieu Weaknesses. The Wall is only good for defense and requires Kokkyo to reflect the damage to defeat his enemies. | Same as before
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
The Wall: A Milieu he gained after the Battle of Crecy. It is a formless type, capable of creating walls out of anything. He even created a wall from the entire infinite universe and used it to bring himself back to Earth. The Walls are a passive and/or active ability, meaning he can make the walls last for as long as he wants to without being aware of them in the first place, such as when he was unaware of his age or when he came out unscathed from a barrage of artillery strikes. In another war against the German-Russian fleet, he used the entire universe and the 4th dimension to control time and further magnify his Reflection Stacking, capable of destroying the entire fleet instantly.
- Reflection: The main ability of The Wall, which allows him to reflect anything, including aging and diseases themselves, which heals him and prevents him from getting tired as it 'reflects' the aspect of tiredness. The speed, power, and durability of the reflection all depends on who's attacking him, thus he has to rely on the enemy in order to deflect the attack against them.
- Shield Propulsion: If Kokkyo were to manually use Reflect, he is able to propel himself at high speeds, being able to from the Earth to the Moon within a second. This could be used offensively, seen as how he decimated the entire city of England and was stated to "disappear".
- Reflection Stacking: A new technique he learned, where he creates to perpendicular walls and constantly reflect one on top of the other and constantly making those reflections, which increases his destructive capacity. Though the limit of this is unknown, he would need the enemy to attack him, which would depend on him tanking the "first" attack of the enemy.
- Reflection Sealing: If Kokkyo were to trap a person inside the stacking reflections, they would be sealed in an endless loop of reflections. This, in turn, nullifies their powers as The Walls would reflect anything, including powers and abilities. Though this technique was not used, he could've used it in multiple occasions during the war, but is already fast enough to dodge the enemy's attack and finds it unnecessary.
